Fluorescent Lamp Program

Most businesses use fluorescent tubes or compact fluorescent lamps to illuminate their places of business. Expended lamps contain various amounts of mercury and other materials that government agencies have banned from ordinary landfills. There may be an ongoing discussion about the harmful affects of small quantities of mercury containing in lamps but the decision to require proper handling has already been made.

Businesses are prohibited from placing these items into their ordinary trash. States vary in their regulation of lamps; many do classify them as universal waste (a subset of hazardous waste). There were rules which exempted some small businesses, some of these rules have expired i.e., California.

Curbside can help you manage your lamps. We collect them and ship them for recycling.

Our basic program provides boxes for your use at no cost. We recommend that you save the original boxes for reuse. We will provide labels that meet D.O.T. requirements. You generally have one year to accumulate lamps before you are required to ship them for recycling.

Curbside will provide you with shipping documents that you can show to any regulatory agency. These documents along with the proper storage and labeling of the accumulating waste will help to ensure that you are in compliance. If your business is located in California, Curbside will provide at no cost, a training program for your employees. California requires that any employees handling lamps complete a training program.

Our highly trained Customer Service Representatives will come to your business, package your lamps and leave you with empty containers (if needed). You pay a price per foot for straight lamps or a price each for compact lamps. We charge by the pound for ballasts. We also collect virtually any other type of lamp required to be managed as universal waste such as sodium and halide lamps used for security.

As with other "green" Curbside programs, there are no minimum charges, extra fees, surcharges or other annoyances.  The program is designed to save you money if you package your own lamps and have the available for us to collect.  We will of course package them for your if required at additional cost.
